Back Pain Treatment

Low back pain is experienced by 75-80% of people once or multiple times during their lives. Back pain can be caused through many activities from Football, Judo, Tennis, Rugby, Gymnastics, and Cricket to everyday life and is regularly seen at our Back2Fitness Injury Clinics in Poole, Bournemouth and Wareham, Dorset.

The Cause of Lower Back Pain

The cause of lower back pain is usually due to muscle that attaches directly to the spine. Lower spinal muscles are strained more commonly than others due to heavy lifting, impact sports, fast rotational movements and muscular imbalances or weaknesses.

The vertebral column consists of vertebrae divided by intervertebral discs that can also be damaged being referred to as disc prolapse or 'slipped disc' as well as the ligaments that give the spine stability. The vertebral column contains and protects the spinal nerve, which a prolapsed disc and other structure can impinge. Nerves travel out from the spine supplying areas of the body such as skin sensation and muscle, when entrapped can produce referred sensations. The sciatic nerve is commonly entrapped resulting in numbness and pins and needles down the back of a leg otherwise known as Sciatica.

Many cases of back pain can if untreated can deteriorate or if unrecognised can have significant effects on other areas of the body.

Treatment of Low Back Pain

Back2Fitness sports therapists will examine your lower back pain to make a diagnosis of the injury. The injury will be treated using a multi-disciplined approach using sports massage, soft tissue techniques and vertebral joint mobilisation. A specific rehabilitation program will be formulated consisting stretches and particularly core strengthening exercises to aid future injury prevention.
