Back2Fitness Sports & General Injury Clinic Poole and Bournemouth treats knee injuries with most common being Runner's Knee or Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome. This injury is not always associated with runner's it is regularly seen in cyclists.

The Iliotibial band is a thick fascial band the runs down the outside of the leg from the tensor fascia latae in the hip to the posterior aspect of the tibia. The band runs over the lateral femoral condyle, this is where the click can be felt when the leg is flexed and extended. This action is repeated in activities like running and cycling leading to pain and inflammation. Irritation of bursae on the lateral aspect of the knee can occur causing increased pain, swelling and discomfort.

The dysfunction will also be assessed to identify its causing predisposing over-training, worn footwear, repetitive training on a track, altered running style due to training errors, fatigue, or other injury.

At Back2Fitness Sports & General Injury Clinic therapist will treat the any local inflammation advising ice and other self-management protocols as well as massage and electrotherapeutic modalities such as ultrasound. The ITB will be stretched and soft tissue massage use to specific muscles (TFL, Gluteals ,Pififormis, Quadricep muscles) and joint mobilisation techniques.

Common cause of Knee Pain: Patello-femoral Syndrome

Patello-femoral syndrome can be associated with Iliotibial Band Syndrome producing frontal knee pain. The kneecap or patella incorrectly aligns causing friction and irritation. Pain is felt when the knee is flexed and extended particularly when walking upstairs and can inhibit the strength of quadriceps muscles. This injury can occur from muscle imbalances and training errors. Back2Fitness clinicians can treat this condition realigning the patella and correct muscle imbalances with rehabilitation exercises.

Other Knee Injuries or Complaints

Knee ligaments sprains or ruptures: - medial collateral ligament sprains are commonly seen followed by ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) ruptures are the most common. Associated medial meniscus damage is associated with medial ligament and anterior cruciate ligament sprains or ruptures.

Meniscus tears: - tears on the fibro cartilage inside the knee producing medial tenderness and a painful click or locking during knee movement.
