Ligament Injury Treatment

Ligament sprains usually occur in the ankle otherwise known as a twisted ankle. Ligament injuries in the knee tend to be the medial ligament and/or ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).

The function of a ligament is to attach bone to bone, therefore are found at most joints. They are damaged when a joint is excessively strained causing their tissue to be overloaded.

Early treatment and care of the ligament is crucial to prevent unnecessary scar tissue that becomes problematic and enable the fastest recovery. The principles of RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) should be followed as soon as possible after a soft tissue injury has occurred.

The treatment for a ligament injury consists of specific soft tissue techniques including sports massage, ultrasound, rehabilitation of muscular strength around the joint and proprioception.
